The story goes...the minute you drive your new car off the lot it depreciates.
Well there is some truth in that statement.
Let's face it EVERYBODY DRIVES A USED CAR.
Some cars hold their value longer than others for several reasons.
For example popular models among car buyers depreciate slower.
Depreciation might not be important to you if you intend to drive your car till it drops.
However, resale value is important if you want to drive a new car for 5 years or less and trade it in.
On average a new car loses 11% of it's value the moment you leave the lot.
Ouch! There goes that new car smell out the window!
During the first 5 years the car depreciates by 15% - 25% each year.
After 5 years the car is worth 37% of what you paid for it at the dealership.
There are a lot of different factors in depreciation depending on the market, car model etc. which we don't cover in this post.
This is just a general guideline.
I have always purchased a used car.
Used car shoppers can use depreciation to save money on a quality used vehicle.
Let someone else take the hit with the new car purchase.
Do your research and purchase a quality used vehicle, that is 2-5 years old and save yourself some money, while still driving a nice car.
